Kick-ass Stories

Over the past week I've been listening to some sermons by Joseph Prince and his stuff is gold! What God has been telling me through his message is just amazing! He reminded me of a particular bible story I love which in turn made me think of some other bible stories that I also loved. So I was trekking through the bible last night finding some of my favourites and decided to share them with the blogging world today.

1. Jehu Kills the Priests of Baal

2 Kings 10:18-31
This is a violent and blunt story, but it has guts - and that's what I like about it. King Jehu basically says to all the Baal worshippers that their previous King didn't know how to throw a good Baal party and that he was going to put on the best ceremony they'd ever seen. He said that they all had to come, and if they didn't come - then they would be killed. So all the Baal supporters in the land rock up to the party and then King Jehu slaughters them all - ingenious. Probably a few moral implications there... but hey he's king so he can do what he wants right?

2. The Contest on Mount Carmel

1 Kings 18:1-40
Another story from Kings, this one about Elijah. He finds himself arguing with some pagans and decides to prove them wrong once and for all, so he sets up a competition - each "team" gets to set up an altar with a sacrifice and then they must ask their gods to set the sacrifice on fire. So the pagans get their altar set up and start praying to their gods, meanwhile Elijah is taunting them and teasing them (hilarious), when they finally give up Elijah pours buckets of water over his own altar and then God lights it up like a bonfire!

3. A Woman Caught in Adultery

John 8:1-11
This one is a lot more low key than the other two, but still brings across a strong point. Jesus' words do some serious pharisee butt kicking - best you read it for yourself to get the point of the story. It's too short to bother doing a plot summary!

So these are some of my favourite stories - anyone else care to share one of theirs?

I was really struck by a story in year 6 RAVE class today....

It was about this guy who obeyed what God told him to do even though everyone thought he was crazy and to be honest, he looked like an idiot...

Now, I know that we can obey God, but at the risk of not only being different, but being what society considers a fruitloop or a nut case? that's a whole other kettle of fish...very cool if you can do it though...

BTW, it was Noah- on oldy but a goldy :D Seriously, imagine if your neighbour started making a massive boat in their backyard, even though you were nowhere near water??

It's not often we think of Noah like that, you always just think that was kinda that "thing to do" in bible times - follow God yeah!? That did do a modern day parody of it on Hamish & Andy's show "Real Stories" a couple years back, turned out to be quite funny! It's probably on youtube.

Samara... This IS God... I command you to build an ark... for there is a big flood coming...

you probably don't need to worry about saving any animals though, just grab some people, have a party, take a computer as well - if you keep the internet then you can pretty much create anything you want when the flood's over. :P :P :P

(ps: not ACTUALLY god here!)
